Part-Time Truck Driving Instructor

SUMMARY

Responsible for providing truck driver training for students to learn the skills necessary to pass their state’s CDL exam. Training includes instruction in the classroom, in a structured roadway environment, and in the public roadway.   Monitoring of maintenance of equipment is also required.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License
  • Current DOT medical card
  • Minimum of 3 years of Class A CDL driving experience and/or combination of CDL trainer experience
  • Knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA) regulations, CDL, IDOT and Illinois Driver’s License Bureau testing requirements

Preferred:

  • Graduate of a truck driving school
  • CDL training experience

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

LEADERSHIP

ADMINISTRATIVE/MANAGEMENT

  1. Prepare and deliver instructional truck driver training to students and prepare students to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle
  2. Use established training materials to present formal class training exercises and lab work to students
  3. Provide training in federal (FMSCA) and state rules and regulations
  4. Provide hands-on training in advanced applications, training, and testing preparations in Vehicle Inspection, Skills/ Maneuvers, and Range and Road Driving Skills required to meet and or exceed requirements needed to successfully pass the Illinois Secretary of State Commercial Driver’s test
  5. Communicate clear objectives for all learning activities and other necessary information
  6. Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment
  7. Use relevant technology to support instruction
  8. Observe and evaluate student’s performance and development
  9. Maintain academic records including syllabus, driving skills checklist and attendance
  10. Manage student behavior in the classroom and on the range by enforcing rules and procedures
  11. Provide appropriate feedback on training materials
  12. Maintain and prepare required reports on the progress of individual students
  13. Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, policies, and school regulations
  14. Assist the Program Coordinator to maintain and report internship information
  15. Assist the Program Coordinator in collecting and maintaining student information regarding employment upon program completion

ACCOUNTABILITY

  1. Handle and maintain confidential matters, including conversations, documents, and correspondence as necessary
  2. Attend training as offered internally within SCC and externally as recommended.

OTHER

  1. Perform other related duties which may be required by the Truck Driving Program Director or Dean of Career & Technology Programs (i.e. duties that may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but are generally within the occupational series and responsibility level associated with the employee’s class of work).
  2. General work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. Evening or weekend hours may be required to participate in other college activities outside of regular working hours.

  • Ability to adapt to the needs of the students, organization, and employees
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Lifting/Climbing: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.  Lifting items up to 25 pounds in weight.  Getting in and out of the training equipment (truck)

WORK ENVIRONMENT    Work is in a standard office/educational setting, as well as an outside environment.  This could include variations in hot and cold temperatures.

SALARY:  $18 per hour
